Type of School: Church
of Uganda (Anglican) founded, funded by the government of Uganda and following
the Ugandan national curriculum
School
Mission: To provide quality education through practical
skills, team work, and self- reliance
and to produce God-fearing persons.
Selective Admissions Policy:
Admissions are based on results from the selection committee of the Uganda
National Examinations Board (UNEB), the main examination authority in Uganda.
Boys and girls are selected at 18 and 20 aggregates respectively. Aggregates
refer to the total grades (see Table 2
below) obtained from the best 8 subjects out of 10 at the end of the 12th
grade, (S.4) in the National Examination called UCE.
School Accreditation:
Accreditation is granted by Ministry of Education and Sports, through the
Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), and confirmed by the school’s
demonstrated UNEB Centre number. Mengo Senior School’s Center number is U0053.
Community: Mengo
Senior School (Mengo S.S.) is located on the outskirts of Kampala in Rubaga
Division (Sub-County). Kampala has a population of 1,353,189, while Rubaga Division has a population of 300,000. This
Division has thirty secondary schools, ninety-seven primary schools and
fifty-four pre-primary schools. Our grade levels are configured according to
the Ugandan education system, which dictates the years of Primary (7), Lower
Secondary (4), and Upper Secondary (2) before joining university, establishing
our 7:4:2 structures. The school body is 97% African, 2% Asian and 1% U.S. American
by passport.
School:
Mengo Senior School is a comprehensive six-year public high school enrolling
4,208 students in Forms 1- 6 (Grade 9 to 14). The school was opened in January 1895
by Anglican missionaries. Mengo S.S. offers the highest number of subjects in
the country in order to give students as many opportunities as possible. The
subjects are categorized under groups as Languages, Social Sciences, Arts,
Natural Sciences and Vocational Courses.
The
Social Sciences include: Entrepreneurship, Literature in English, Music, and
Commerce. Languages include: German, English, Luganda (a local language) and
General Studies. The Arts include: History, Geography, Economics and Christian
Religious Education (CRE). The Natural Sciences include: Physics, Chemistry, Principle
Mathematics, Subsidiary Mathematics and Biology. The Vocational subjects
include: Technical Drawing (TD), Foods and Nutrition (FN), Clothing and Textile
(CT), and Subsidiary Information Technology (ICT).
Grade Scale:
Students at high school in Uganda do not ‘graduate’ but their standing is
determined by the number of Principle Passes they obtain in the national exams.
A principal pass (PP) ranges from scores ranging from A (6 points-the highest)
up to E (2 points-the lowest). A Subsidiary Pass (SP) is obtained with an O (1
point). Two years ago, Mengo S.S. used
to grade higher than UNEB, but in 2015 UNEB upgraded its grading policy.
Currently the grading of Mengo S.S. is the same as that of UNEB. Some of the
details of the grading are shown below:
